Turok – Dinosaur Hunter: Life Finds a Way. My Bullets Say Otherwise.

vlcsnap-2015-06-23-02h26m59s797

Turok was the zeitgeist of the nineties. Released during the heyday of the Jurassic Park craze (and just three months prior to the the opening of the second movie, The Lost World), Turok was an appealing fantasy for those who yearned to mow down velociraptors with a machine gun in one hand and a shotgun in the other.

Unsurprisingly, Turok: Dinosaur Hunter was a staple of any early Nintendo 64 collection. The gameplay was violent, the weapons were rad, and for those of us still too young to take games seriously, the cheat menu guaranteed hours of endless shooting sprees with our friends, consequences be damned.

Some Gentle Substitutions

I’m swapping out two games in my backlog for various reasons. Rather than simply drop a bunch of games like I did before, it seemed like a better idea to substitute in some more appropriate games so that the overall game count stays the same (and I don’t feel like I cheated myself of properly clearing my backlog). I will be switching out the following games:

1. Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars for Commandos 2: Men of Courage

Command & Conquer 3: I recently picked up the Command & Conquer: The Ultimate Collection for less than a price of a taxi in NYC so that I could play through Command & Conquer: Generals. This gave me access to all 17 C&C games in the series’ history. With such a vast collection at my disposal, it felt inappropriate to cherry-pick the third game from the list without going through the rest of the games from start to finish. Yes, this means that after all of this is said and done, I will be playing through all of the C&C games (God rest my soul). Hey, at least it will make for a unique series of articles…

Commandos 2: For the exact opposite reason as above. I recently played through the first Commandos game plus its expansion, and the third game is also on my list. It only makes sense to fill in the gap so that I don’t leave the middle part of the series unplayed. Hopefully the second isn’t as long as the first ones…

2. Final Fantasy IV for Tomb Raider II

Final Fantasy IV: Fans of FF are probably shrieking at me right now, I know. Final Fantasy IV is considered the second greatest two-dimensional FF game, bested only by the masterpiece that is Final Fantasy VI. But I’m bugged by it for the exact same reasons as above – it’s just one game in a series. I owe it to myself to play the others before I play the fourth. At least that’s what my OCD is telling me right now. Good lord, though, the feat of playing through the numbered Final Fantasy games from start to finish deserves it’s own blog entirely.

Tomb Raider II: A bit anti-climactic compared to the grandeur of FFIV, but it’s distinguishing characteristic is that it’s the only other unbeaten game in my PS1 collection! On top of that, I beat the first Tomb Raider just a few weeks before the actual start of this blog, so I won’t be bugged by having not started at the beginning! My neuroticism and I agree for once. The downside is that the lack of dual analog controls made the first game infuriating to control, and it still hasn’t changed for the second. Good thing I’ve got my good ol’ pal ePSXe and his friendly save states to help me out with the job!

So that’s that. Fun fact: Both of my replacement games were made by Eidos Interactive! Much love for the company that brought us not only to the two series above but Hitman, Freedom Fighters, Deus Ex, Thief, and TimeSplitters to name a handful. At this rate I might be through their entire catalog of games by the time I’m done my backlog.

Can I finish my backlog by my 25th birthday?

June will mark the first anniversary of this blog, and depending on how many games I play in the next few weeks, it may just mark the end of it. The number of unfinished games in my collection is winding steadily downward. If we ignore the “co-op only” games in my Steam catalog, I have just about 15 left to beat. Many of those are halfway done as well. Among the games nearing completion are:

– Alpha Protocol
– Super Smash Bros. for 3DS
– Crash Bandicoot
– WarCraft III
– Gunpoint

My 25th birthday is on May 22. I wonder – is it enough time to clear out the rest of my games? I began this blog with roughly 75 games in various states of completion. Now, roughly a year later, I’m down to a handful of them. Some of those games only took me a few days to beat. Others, like Scribblenauts, took a firm application of discipline and patience to get through. The games left on my backlog are a healthy mix of both, so it’s tough to make an accurate estimate of how much time I have left on them.

I’ve got 56 days until May 22, and about 15 games left on the backlog. That means beating a game once every four days. Possible? Most certainly. Tough? Most likely as well. An awesome way to celebrate a 25th birthday? Hell yes.

Crash Bandicoot: This Game Was Designed to Drive Children Insane

Some of you may have noticed that my backlog is getting pretty short these days, and this inevitably means finishing a few of the more loathsome games in my collection. I avoided Crash Bandicoot because I recalled it being hard. I did not recall it making me want to chuck the controller at a wall.

Now I know what you’re saying – “Crash Bandicoot? I loved that game as a kid! No way, you’re telling me you can’t beat that shit?” No, the game you are remembering is its well-known and much-beloved sequel Cortex Strikes Back, where you get to ride around on cute polar bears and fly around on sweet jet packs. This is the first game, where you tear your hair out and curse at the television.

Seven Practical Tips for Clearing Out Your Backlog

backlog_front_page

Clearing out a backlog is a game of mental endurance. I started this blog because I love to write in my spare time, but also because I had already been trying for over a year to beat my old collection of games. During high school I made a habit of collecting cheap games from just about anywhere I could find them – bargain bins, yard sales, used game stores. Even a used electronics stall at Coney Island once (Conker’s Bad Fur Day for $4 – what a steal!). There was always a gem to be found somewhere.

Most of the games I bought I actually played and beat, but every so often I would get frustrated, put them down, and then never go back to them. Making this blog was my promise to go back and finish those games, come hell or high water.

Life is Strange – Episode One: Well, I Guess I’m Hooked Now

vlcsnap-2015-03-11-22h45m48s114

Fresh off the heels of PAX East with a game code in tow from their panel, I decided to give DONTNOD’s Life is Strange a try before it started collecting dust in my Steam library. Narrative-driven games like this are among my favorites – Indigo Prophecy was a cherished high school experience, and Heavy Rain only upped the ante – but for some reason I tend to ignore most of them. Perhaps it’s because a good chunk of the games that fall into that category are frauds – nothing more than pretentious experimental bullcrap masquerading as emotionally-fueled artwork.

This was certainly my fear when I heard that Square Enix was publishing an episodic story-driven series à la Telltale’s The Walking Dead. Even more so when I discovered that its developer DONTNOD’s first project was Remember Me, a game that, in a twist of pure cosmic irony, no one actually remembers. Thankfully, it turns out, I had nothing to worry about.

The PAX East Report: Day Three

image

PAX East and Daylight Saving Time make poor bedfellows. Especially when you’re up until four in the morning writing articles for your blog. I had to be at the con by 10am this morning for Watch the Skies, and my body ached with every step I made. Note to self – try not to make such poor life choices.

The PAX East Report: Day Two

image

No rest for the wicked – another early morning for PAX East today as we got ready for our main con day. I needed to get to the expo center by 10am today so that we could get a game of Steel Battalion going with everyone in the morning. Since the shuttle service is a little slow between out hotel and the convention center, I managed to hop on board a van arranged by a group of fellow con-goers this morning in order to make it there on time. As expected, they were cool about me joining up, and $5 is all it took me to get to the con on time. I departed ways with them at the main entrance, but not before I snapped a quick pic with them and they told me they ran a YouTube group called The Squat Brigade. If anything, its wonderful to meet new people at PAX East.

The PAX East Report: Day One

image
We arrived in Boston last night, and despite my best intentions I wasn’t able to get a post up last night thanks to a few other… preoccupations (beer). This will be our fourth year at PAX East, and we’ve got a record breaking 17 people with us this year (or more, depending on who you count). Organizing this trip is can be real headache with that many people, which is why I’m thankful Andrew and Brett do literally all of the work and I don’t have to lift a finger (thanks guys!).

Evolve: A Refreshing Take on Multiplayer Action

evolve_banner

When free time is lean and I’ve only got an hour or two a day to commit to gaming, my go-to games are the ones I can pick up and play at a moments notice. I remember seeing a playable demo for Evolve at PAX East last year (complete with life-size Goliath monument), but since I didn’t feel like wasting my time in a 2-hour line, I decided to skip out on it. I recently got sucked into it, however, thanks to Andrew and fellow Evolve enthusiast Tom, and I’m actually finding it be one of the most refreshing multiplayer games I’ve played in a long time.
